Let’s Talk about Clothes | Minneapolis Child & Family Photographer

OK so a lot of people ask, “What should I wear” to my session?  Well, wow!  That’s a super hard question!  I can point you to a whole bunch of websites if you want, but sometimes that can be overwhelming and possibly a little out of the budget!?

You are more than welcome to shop at the following (btw these are all links to the respective websites = ) J.Crew (crew cuts!), Mini Boden, Matilda Jane, Abercrombie kids, Justice, GAP, Gymboree, etc., but let’s talk about some less expensive options!  Or maybe you can even work with things that your kids (girls) have out-grown a little?  Or work with things that are already in your closet!  Grab something you totally LOVE and then just add something new to it!  A scarf?  A sweater?  A jacket?  I LOVE layers!

If you want to buy new stuff & for a less expensive option, I work at Target so I took it upon myself to take a peek at some of the kids’ clothes they have out right now and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found!  I am LOVING the “Genuine Kids” by Oshkosh collection they have!   I wish I could find some photos for them but there don’t appear to be any on the internet…  REALLY adorable little dresses for infant-5T girls and they are just $14.99!  There are some really cute “Cherokee” & “Circo” dresses too.  Pair that with some ruffle-bottom leggings and Converse and you have yourself a cute, yet more “trendy” outfit!  Don’t forget a  headband or hat!  I think accessories make the outfit!   They have some nice stuff for boys too!

I LOVE this little dress from Target (but it doesn’t appear to be in stores??)! (see link)  So adorable!   It would even be cute on an older girl to wear as a top over jeans rather than a dress!  I’m even thinking of getting this for my daughter to wear as a top!  But I think 5T might be pushing it when she’s in a size 12 girls…hmmm!  haha!

I’m really liking the “3d” elements on shirts I’ve been seeing lately – flowers (like on the dress/shirt above), ruffles, etc.  I just ordered this shirt today for Claire from J.Crew - $34 is more than I  normally spend on a shirt, but there was something about it I just loved!  I hope it looks as nice in person!

For boys, well, let’s admit it – there just isn’t as much variety as there is for girls – but I just LOVE:

  • distressed jeans
  • converse or vans shoes
  • button-up shirts underneath a sassy short-sleeved t-shirt
  • cute hats -esp “newsboy” hats and fedoras!
  • “rock star” stuff – w/ cute gel-spiked hair!
  • casual/fun ties!

Other places you can check out = TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Old Navy, Children’s Place, Wal-Mart (they have SUPER cute rain boots!!), etc.  Anyway, I’m rambling.  Here is Claire from 2006 – this is just an example of a dress worn over jeans.  She still has this dress in her closet!!  And it’s like a size 5 or 6….so for girls, the out-grown dresses can easily turn into cute tops!

This top here was actually like size 24 months!  Claire was about 5 or 6 yrs old here…. (2005)  For FAMILIES – I personally think this is the easiest way to plan outfits:

Step 1 = pick the girl or the youngest/most personality/”wildest” child in the family and get the most ADORABLE outfit you can find!

Step 2 = coordinate everyone else to go with the adorable outfit.  But don’t match exactly.  i.e. don’t get the same shirt/dress/outfit just in a smaller size/different color. :-)

Hope that helps!  Of course you are welcome to wear whatever you want, but these are just a few suggestions. :-)
